Thomas, 68, is a husband, father, grandfather and friend of many. He worked hard for many years providing for his family and was finally able to retire and enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Little did he know he would fall into a new role.
Thomas became a caregiver to a dear friend. He was familiar with the role of caregiver in regards to his parents, but this was a new challenge, which he met with grace, love and humor.
Thomas makes sure his friend has whatever he needs, even if it means he goes without.
The holidays are here and money is tight, but Thomas will never let his friend know of his own financial pinch. Any assistance for Thomas would be greatly appreciated.
This is just one of the many stories of people who will receive help through The Garden Island/Zonta Club of Kauai Christmas Fund, which kicked off its fundraising drive on Friday.
In the last three years, the fund has raised about $80,000.
This year, it is off to a strong start.
The Hawaii Community Foundation Kauai Office reported that a donor would like to challenge the community to help raise funds for the fund.
The donor has pledged to match any donation from $150 to $5,000. The final grant to Zonta Club will be tallied at the end of the campaign and will be sent from the Hale Uluwehi Kauai Fund at the Hawaii Community Foundation.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges, and who would appreciate a little help.
Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.
The Zonta Club of Kauai was started April 1, 1952, and in the ‘80s added the Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, a nonprofit for fundraising. In the 1980s, Zonta Club of Kauai partnered with TGI to publish stories — with information provided by social agencies — about their clients’ needs, so they could have a brighter Christmas.
